Over 200 Vinayaka idols that were installed by Hindu Munnani and other outfits at various places in the city and on its outskirts were taken out in processions and immersed in River Cauvery here on Thursday.

The idols were installed on September 2 at the public places and along the roads and were monitored round the clock by the organisers.

While idols kept in Sathyamangalam, Gobichettipalayam and Chennimalai were taken out in processions and immersed on September 3 and 4, 185 idols in the city were assembled on Sampath Nagar – Nasiyanur Road from afternoon.

The procession that began at 5 p.m. passed through Periyavalasu, Municipal Colony, Parimalam Complex, Mettur Road, MGR Statue, Brough Road, Eswaran Kovil, Manikoondu, Krishna Theatre and Karungalpalayam. Police personnel were present in large numbers en route.

Later, in the evening, the idols were immersed in the river.

Traffic was diverted on arterial roads and on Cauvery Road to ensure smooth passage of the procession.

Senior police officials said that no untoward incidents were reported during the day. Likewise, processions were taken out in Kadathur, Arachalur, Anthiyur and Bhavani Sagar where over 55 Vinayaka idols were immersed in Bhavani and Cauvery rivers.
