The Vegetable Show in Kotagiri concluded on Sunday and more than 9,000 visitors had come to the show on Saturday and Sunday.

At the valedictory function on Sunday of the two-day event organised by the Horticulture Department in Kotagiri as part of the summer festival, The Nilgiris District Collector P. Shankar distributed prizes to winners of kitchen garden contest and for the best displays at the stalls put by farmers.

Horticulture Department officials said that this year 31 applications were received from different parts of the district for the kitchen garden contest, which had five categories based on the area of the garden. The applications were received two weeks ago and the aim was to encourage kitchen garden cultivation. In the case of stalls put up by farmers, there were vegetables and fruits grown in hill areas and in the plains. This included yam, carrot, cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini and red cabbage.

The officials said that the department purchased the vegetables from the farmers from The Nilgiris and in the case of displays from other districts, vegetables were sourced from that area.
