The Association of University Teachers (AUT) has written to the Governor-Chancellor saying that the Search Committee constituted to short-list and recommend names for appointment of an aspirant as Vice Chancellor of Bharathiar University, has overstepped its jurisdiction.
In its letter, the organisation’s state president N. Pasupathi said the clarification from the Governor-Chancellor’s office on its role in the selection of a candidate had clearly showed that the Search Committee had overstepped its jurisdiction.
The very fact that all the 10 short-listed candidates were from science faculty and none was from social science, humanities or literature spoke volumes about the approach the Committee had adopted, he said.
The University's history showed how candidates who did not belong to its system but were appointed had failed miserably, the AUT state president contended.
Claiming that the shortlisted candidates did not meet basic eligibility criteria and were zeroed in to serve a political agenda, the AUT reiterated its demand for dissolving the Search Committee and constituting it afresh.
Separately, the Aided College Teachers’ Association, in a statement urged the Governor-Chancellor to dissolve the Search Committee alleging that one of its members canvassed support for the panel. If the short-listed candidates were called for interview it would do no good as the process of short-listing itself was questionable, the Association said.
