‘Use machines to clean drains’

Coimbatore Corporation and other local bodies in the district should use machinery and not men to clean drains, the Coimbatore unit of the Untouchability Eradication Front (UEF) has said.

In a resolution passed at its second district conference held here on Sunday, the UEF said condemned the corporation and other local bodies that deployed men and women to clean and remove blocks in drains, which went against a Supreme Court order, and the State Government’s directives.

The district administration should ensure that the kin of the workers killed a couple of years ago while cleaning a drain at a club on Avinashi Road were given government jobs.
