Two trucks intercepted: ration rice seized

Mettuppalayam Police and Civil Supplies officials on suspicion intercepted two trucks laden with tomato and found that in both the vehicles one tonne each of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice was concealed under the tomato consignment.

It is learnt that when the officials asked the drivers to stop for a check, both the drivers sped past without obeying the signals.

The vehicles were intercepted.

Nazar (28), Abdul Khader (33), Jaffar Babu (24), Abhi (22) and Sabir (22) were taken into custody.

Arrested

Murugan (45) of Podanur was arrested by the police on Wednesday on charges of possessing and selling five litres of toddy. It is learnt that he brought toddy from Palakkad and was selling it here. A sum of Rs. 500 was also recovered from him.

Found dead

Two persons were found dead in two different incidents in the city and the police suspected the same to be suicide.

According to police Balamurugan (29) of Ramakrishnapuram near Ganapathy in Saravanampatti police limits and Shanmugam (43) of Kavundamapalayam were found dead and the deaths are suspected to be suicides owing to prolonged ailment. Investigations are on.

Chain snatching

Miscreants snatched the gold chain weighing four-and-a-half-sovereign of Prabha (34) wife of Ganesan at P&T Colony near Narashima Naickenpalayam on Tuesday.

In another incident, Lakshmi (22) was nabbed when she attempted to steal a one-and-a-half sovereign gold chain from the bag of Meena (36) when she was travelling.
