Two saw mills closed

June 02, 2011 12:38 pm | Updated 12:38 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

Forest Department officials from the Anamalai Tiger Reserve late on Monday closed two saw mills at Kinathukkadavu.

The Supreme Court had ordered that saw mills established on or after 2002 should not be allowed to function.

The objective of the order was to stop illegal tree felling inside forests. The forest officials had prepared a list of saw mills that came into being after 2002.

In Kinathukkadavu, there are 14 saw mills of which seven came into existence in 2002 and after. On instructions from the Field Director of Anamalai Tiger Reserve H. Basavaraju and Deputy Director/District Forest Officer A. Thiagaraj, a team led by Range Officer – Pollachi Veeramani sealed two saw mills at Kallangattupalayam and Sikkarampalayam.

Five mills could not be sealed because the procedure demands the presence of the owner.
