Two women who went to work in Kuwait were allegedly cheated of their salary, were made to work long hours and subjected to harassment by the employers, their family members claimed here on Monday.
Grievances redress meeting
K. Selvam and M. Thirumurthy from Uthukuli submitted two separate petitions to District Collector K.S. Palanisamy during the grievances redress meeting.
They claimed that their wives, Vasanthamani and Rajeswari respectively, were taken to Kuwait by an agent with a promise of ₹ 50,000 salary. But were later told that the salary would be only ₹ 22,500. While Ms. Rajeswari left to Kuwait on May 2, Ms. Vasanthamani left on May 22. They were allegedly made to work from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. next day with only one meal a day, the petitioners claimed.
The petitioners also claimed that the Uthukuli police did not take any action on the complaints lodged by them. Mr. Selvam and Mr. Thirumurthy were neighbours whose wives were allegedly cheated by the same agent, according to the petition.
The Kuwait counterpart of the agent had allegedly extorted ₹ 1.2 lakh each from the petitioners. Ms. Rajeswari’s hand were broken by the employer at Kuwait, as she sent a photograph of her bandaged arm to Mr. Thirumurthy using another employee’s mobile phone, the petitions said. Alleging that both the women had not received their salaries till date, the petitioners requested Mr. Palanisamy to rescue them from Kuwait.
