Two held for transporting waste from Kerala to city

Podanur police on Monday took drivers of two lorries into custody after they were found to have transported non-biodegradable waste from Kerala to Coimbatore.

Police said that Sivakumar from Mysore and Vadivel from Villupuram were taken into custody after residents from Pillayarpuram complained that they attempted to empty the waste in two lorries in a deserted place.

The incident took place in the early hours of Monday. Investigation by police found that the trucks, covered with polythene sheets, had come from Ernakulam in Kerala.

Asked whether the trucks had medical waste, police said that officials from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had checked the lorries and their report was awaited.

They added that the two men were being interrogated at Podanur police station.
