Two arrested with 2,200 kg of ration rice

The Civil Supplies CID (CS CID), Pollachi unit, on Monday arrested two persons who attempted to smuggle 2,200 kg of rice which is meant to be distributed through the public distribution system.

The CS CID sleuths conducted vehicle checks on Tamil Nadu – Kerala borders at Velanthavalam and Walayar from 4 a.m. on Monday based on specific information that a few persons were smuggling ration rice to Kerala.

A team apprehended D. Fernandes of Kerala who attempted to smuggle 1,100 kg of ration rice in a three-wheeler at the Palakkad Road - Velanthavalam junction around 6 a.m.

Another team arrested I. Sadiq (26) who was found smuggling 1,100 kg of ration rice to Kerala in a three-wheeler through Walayar check post around 8 a.m.

Murder case accused detained under Goondas Act

A man who was arrested by the Annur police earlier this year for murder of a youth was detained under provisions of the Goondas Act on Monday.

The detainee has been identified as K. Tamilselvan (26), a resident of Pillayampalayam near Kariyampalayam at Annur. The Annur polcie had arrested Tamilselvan on charge of murdering S. Saravanan (19) of Annur on January 27. Acting on the recommendations of Superintendent of Police V. Badrinarayanan, Coimbatore Collector G.S. Sameeran invoked provisions of the Goondas against Tamilselvan.

Man held with 8 kg ganja

The Madukkarai police on Monday arrested a man on charges of possessing 8.10 kg of ganja. The police said Prasanta Kumar Barik (31), who hails from Gobindapur village of Tihidi taluk in Odisha, was arrested with the contraband from Bodipalayam.
