Truck strike loss estimated at Rs. 250 crore a day in Coimbatore

Of the 25,000 lorries in the district, 15,000 did not transport goods on Thursday as part of the strike call by All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) to protest against the exorbitant toll being collected in the toll plazas.

The loss incurred by the lorry owners here is estimated to be nearly Rs. 250 crore a day, according to Coimbatore Lorry Owners’ Association president K.S. Kaliaperumal. Vehicles that had gone to other States are returning to Coimbatore now and they will not carry goods from Friday.

Vehicles that had left Coimbatore are not proceeding to the destination because of the strike, he said.

Intensified

The strike will intensify on Friday, he said.
