Trial collection of toll from vehicles using Dhimbam Ghat Road begins

Collection of toll from vehicles using Dhimbam Ghat Road began on a trial basis here on Thursday. Officials said that users have to pay the fee only from July 1 and till that receipts will be issued without fee.

The road passes through 27 hairpin bends and serves as a main link between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Frequent breakdown of overloaded lorries and vehicles carrying goods beyond the permitted height resulted in disruption of traffic on the road.

Hence, the district administration, with the help of Forest Department, has installed height restriction bars and weighing machines at check posts at Bannari and Hasanur. Toll booths were also established at these check posts to collect fee.

District Forest Officer (Sathyamangalam) P.G. Arunlal inaugurated the toll booth and weighing machines. While four-wheelers would be charged ₹ 20, six-wheelers ₹ 50, eight-wheelers ₹ 60, 10-wheelers ₹ 80 and 12-wheelers would be charged ₹ 100.

Government vehicles and government buses will be exempted from paying toll, they added. Officials said that it would take an hour for vehicles from Bannari check post to reach Hasanur check post and the Forest Department has proposed to fix a monthly fee for local people in Sathyamangalam, Hasanur, Talamalai, Talavadi, Germalam and Mavellam.

On Friday, members of all political parties, all traders association and farmers association submitted a petition to the District Forest Officer seeking withdrawal of toll collection.
