Don't break traffic laws. Or else the moment you are caught violating traffic rule, you will have to pay a lot of money as fine.
The traffic police have begun implementing the spot-fine scheme, in which the personnel will collect the fine the moment a vehicle user is found violating a traffic rule.
“We have imposed tougher fines under this scheme in order to curb traffic violations,” Superintendent of Police S. Paner Selvam says.
If you jump a signal, you will have to pay Rs. 100. Jumping the signal second time around will cost you Rs. 300. If are caught speeding, you will have to pay Rs. 300 for the first offence; If you drive the vehicle while talking on the cell phone, you will have to shell out Rs. 1,500.
If a vehicle is used without registration, a sum of Rs. 2,500 will be collected as fine. Overloading will attract a fine of Rs. 2000 and an additional amount of Rs. 1,000 per tonne excess load together with the charges for off-loading the excess weight. Driving a two-wheeler which is not insured will cost Rs. 500 for the first offence and Rs. 1,000 for the second subsequent offence.
There are 34 types of offences for which the traffic police will collect the fine on the spot. “If offenders are not able to pay the fine, their vehicles will be detained.
These vehicles will be handed over to the owners only after the fine is paid,” Mr. Paner Selvam said.
Police officials said that the scheme would be implemented strictly across the district in order to bring down the number of traffic violations.
“Once the violations are brought down, it will help reduce the number of road accidents,” the officials added.
