A sub-inspector engaged in vehicle check near Pollachi in Coimbatore allegedly wielded lathi at a two-wheeler rider, causing an accident in which the leg of one of the pillion riders was fractured.

Following the incident, tension prevailed at Thensangampalayam, near Pollachi, where the accident took place. The accident took place on Monday afternoon when three persons namely Sanfar, Sardar and Afsal, all hailing from Podanur, were travelling in a two-wheeler. Sanfar rode the two-wheeler with Sardar and Afsal as first and second pillion riders.

Kottur sub-inspector Sambadam, who was engaged in vehicle check asked the rider to stop the two-wheeler. Since he did not stop the vehicle, the officer allegedly wielded lathi at the second pillion rider. The rider lost control of the two-wheeler which in turn rammed a stationary autorickshaw.

While Sanfar and Afsal escaped, Sardar's left leg was fractured in the accident. The injured man was shifted to Government Hospital, Pollachi. People thronged the road and staged a sit-in following the incident, bringing traffic to a halt for over 30 minutes. The situation eased after Valparai DSP Vivekanandan came to the spot and assured disciplinary action against the SI.

Sources said that the Superintendent of Police has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
