Teams formed to tackle rain-related problems

November 01, 2011 11:51 am | Updated 11:51 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The Coimbatore Corporation has formed zone-wise teams to address problems that arise out of rain. Sharing the details of the teams and other efforts the civic body had taken with the newly elected councillors, Mayor S.M. Velusamy said in a release that the councillors could report rain-related damage, poor condition of roads, chocked sewerage, fell trees, and other issues to the assistant commissioner of the zone concerned.

In each of the five zones, the civic body had constituted a team of engineers, which, within in 30 minutes of the receipt of the information, would rush to the troubled spot and start the remedial action. In case of delay, the councillors could report the issue to either the Mayor or Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy.

Mr. Velusamy said that he held the meeting because the Corporation had been receiving reports of stagnant rain water, damaged roads, etc. And also because as new representatives of the people in the civic body, the councillors should know about the issues and also whom to contact to provide relief in their area.

The Corporation had kept its schools in a state of readiness to take in people if they were to be evacuated from their houses in low-lying areas. It had also asked its health wing to work to prevent the outbreak of contagious diseases.

The Mayor informed the councillors of the new helpline facility in the Corporation (ph: 2302323) to alert officials about any rain-related problem in the city.

At the meeting the Corporation also provided the councillors with the list of phone numbers of officials working in their ward.

Along with Mr. Ponnusamy, Deputy Mayor N. Chinnadurai; R. Doraisamy, MLA; Deputy Commissioner S. Sivarasu; City Engineer K. Karunakaran, and officials from health and engineering wings participated.
