In the wake of the water crisis in Tamil Nadu, children must be taught water management in schools as part of the curriculum, State general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vanathi Srinivasan said here on Wednesday. Ms. Srinivasan told presspersons at Perumanallur that the public must come forward to protect water bodies such as lakes and ponds.

On the draft National Education Policy (NEP), she said the two-language formula would continue in Tamil Nadu as long as the State wished. Noting that the State did not accept the three-language formula proposed by the draft NEP, Ms. Srinivasan said that an opportunity to learn a new language must be created in schools, irrespective of which language it might be.

Claiming that many development projects have been carried out in the State by the Central government, Ms. Srinivasan said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had always been supportive of Tamil Nadu's growth.

The BJP leader said the membership drive for the State unit of the party would be conducted from July 6 to August 10. After this, the elections for the party administrators would be held at zonal, district and State levels. Persons above the age of 18 and eligible to vote could become a member of the party, she said. The BJP planned to strengthen its units in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
