Taxi and auto rickshaw drivers claimed that they helped transport officials seize two-wheelers allegedly operating as illegal bike taxis here on Tuesday.

B. Mahesh, a taxi driver who was part of the activity, said that the drivers posed as customers and used the mobile application of a bike taxi aggregator to book the bike taxis. “We made the bookings at places like Ramnagar, R.S. Puram and V.O.C. Park,” he said, claiming that the taxi and auto rickshaw drivers brought the vehicles to the Regional Transport Office – Central on Balasundaram Road.

The Madras High Court ordered on July 18 that no private company should use private two-wheelers and four-wheelers for services titled as ‘bike taxi, call taxi or carpooling’ through mobile applications, until the State government frames necessary regulations.

When contacted, a senior transport official said that 10 vehicles were seized by the RTO officials on Tuesday and that the auto rickshaw and taxi drivers do not have any authority to act on the bike taxis. “They have to file a complaint with the RTO first and we will seize vehicles based on the complaints,” the official said. A total of 127 two-wheelers were seized at the RTO – Central since January.
