The Mettupalayam Municipality has stepped up its drive to collect property tax and water charges. Disconnection of water supply of defaulters is also being carried out.

Municipal Chairman D. Sathish Kumar said that a team led by Municipal Commissioner G. Elangovan had already directed for stepping up the tax and water charges realisation in all the 33 wards spread over 7.2 sq km.

At present, the civic body has a realisation of 89 per cent in property tax and 65 per cent in water charges. Now efforts were on to realise the remaining Rs. 70 lakh due by way of water charges and Rs. 40 lakh from property tax. Officials expect the realisation levels to go up in the next two weeks as the fiscal draws to a close.

Realisation of tax revenue was paramount for speeding up the development works, Mr. Kumar said.
