Officials from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco), alongside local staff, have been working round the clock for the last three days to get the Kundah Power House 5 in Avalanche working.

A huge landslip brought down boulders, mud and trees, narrowly missing the power house, but preventing the generation of electricity at the facility.

A team of 25 personnel are removing mud and trees from the tailrace portion of the facility, which is where water discharged from the facility after being used for power generation is guided through and into the Avalanche Dam.

A senior Tangedco official said that water from Upper Bhavani reached the power house via tunnels. The powerhouse was capable of generating around 40 mw at short notice. However, the record rainfall in the area last week led to a huge landslip bringing down debris hundreds of feet down a sheer cliff-face, which led to a portion of the powerhouse becoming choked.

On Thursday, personnel at the powerhouse were working throughout the day to clear a pathway through the debris to ensure water can flow in and out of the powerhouse without any hindrance.

The officials expect to complete the work by the weekend, and begin generation by early next week. They said that for the time being, storage level at Upper Bhavani was being maintained by allowing water to flow into River Bhavani.
