Tangedco cuts power supply to Coonoor municipal buildings

Disconnection over power charges dues; restores supply after talks

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) disconnected power supply to buildings controlled by the Coonoor Municipality on Friday due to non-payment of dues.

On Friday morning, buildings of the municipality, including those rented out to government offices, suffered a blackout after the Tangedco cut off power supply, as the local body did not meet the deadline for the payment of dues, amounting to ₹72 lakh.

Officials from the Coonoor Municipality confirmed that supply had been cut, but also said that it was restored after they held talks with Tangedco officials.

“With the Unlawful Activities Prevention Tribunal set to hold a hearing during the weekend, we persuaded Tangedco to restore power, and have asked for more time to settle the dues,” said an official.

The official added that dues had not been paid to Tangedco as the municipality itself was facing financial problems.

However, steps were being taken to address the issue, officials said. Efforts to increase revenue from premises leased to merchants and businesses, and through other means were being considered.

“Moreover, we have approached the Commissioner of Municipal Administration, seeking funds to address the financial problems faced by the local body,” he added.
