Talks over implementing UGD project fail

Talks over implementing underground sewerage scheme (UGSS) at Sathyamangalam municipality failed as representatives of political parties and the public staged a walkout from the meeting venue.

The municipality is implementing the ₹55 crore UGSS.

Work is on to construct the water pumping station near the River Bhavani at Ayyappan Kovil, while an effluent treatment plant is being constructed at Kottuveerampalayam.

However, people opposed to the setting up of the treatment plants wanted them to be located five km away from the river.

They added that once implemented, sewage would directly enter the river polluting the water.

Demanding the relocation of the two plants, members of political parties, traders and the public staged protest and also downed their shutters.

A meeting was organised at Sathyamangalam Taluk that was presided over by District Revenue Officer S. Kavitha on Tuesday.
