Talks held to end varsity staff protest

Officials from the Labour Department held talks with Periyar University staff and Management on Friday to bring to an end to the protest conducted by a section of staff demanding revocation of suspension orders against four staff members.

The University recently suspended Shaktivel, Krishnaveni, Kanivannan and Senthil Kumar, office-bearers of two employees organisations, allegedly for conducting a press meet against the University.

Demanding revocation of the suspension orders and action on various other demands, staff of the University have been protesting for three days. P.Kolandaivel, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that a committee would be set up to look into the matter.

On Friday, the Labour Department officials held talks with the protesters and the management.

Shaktivel of Periyar University Employees Union said that they might decide to end or suspend the protests temporarily based on outcome of the talks.
