The 10th edition of The Hindu Edge Career Counselling and Fair got under way at the Suguna Kalyana Mandapam here on Saturday. As in the previous years, eager students and anxious parents thronged the fair to not just get an idea of colleges or courses but a comprehensive understanding of what the students would be studying in each discipline and the career opportunities for the disciplines.
The students also got to listen to academics, competitive exam experts and motivational speakers on Saturday.
Sri Krishna Institutions is the presenting sponsor of the Fair, which is powered by KMCH and Dr. NGP Institutions. TIPS Global Institute, Karunya University and Master Jee IIT Academy are the co-sponsors. The banking partner is Syndicate Bank and The Hindu Tamil is the co-organiser.
Inaugurating the fair and releasing the education directory CD, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan asked the students to be not satisfied with what they have achieved. They should have an aim and a plan of action to achieve it but while doing so they must be open minded.
He suggested that the parents have a frank discussion with their wards before suggesting and deciding what they should study, in case the latter had not made up their mind.
S. Malarvizhi, Chairperson, Sri Krishna Institutions, said that every course had its merit or advantages and so the students choosing a course or college must be happy with those. Today’s higher education was also about innovation and application of what they were learning. Mere rote learning would not do.
Therefore, the parents and students must make an informed choice.
Retired police informer A. Kaliamoorthy said education was about career building, the importance of values and the negative impact of mobile phones on students.
J. Satheesh Kumar, Co-founder and Executive Director, Master Jee IIT Academy, said how the students should negotiate the NEET. He also busted myths about the exam.
Ramesh Prabha, Chairman, Galaxy Institute of Management Bhavesh Gandhi, Founder, Strut Dance School, and Niranjan Iyengar, script writer and lyricist, also addressed the students.
