With the Plus-Two results out, parents and their wards are in a rush to secure seats at colleges here. Serpentine queue to obtain applications were witnessed in front of the Government Arts College here on Monday.
Besides students who chose arts and commerce in Plus-Two, many who chose pure science and computer science were also part of the crowd. Lack of job opportunities for engineering graduates, lack of cut-off marks, low fees and availability of jobs across domains has been the major attraction for students towards Arts.
R. Kannan, a student who chose computer science in Plus-Two, was one among the crowd at Government Arts College here. Kannan wants to study Bachelor of Business Administration and he wishes to set up a startup in future. “Though I chose computer science in Plus-Two, lack of job opportunities for engineering graduates in the recent years has made me choose Arts degree over B.E. I also wish to run my own firm in future hence I’m applying for BBA here”, he said.
M. Muthamil, another applicant who chose pure science in Plus-Two, said that higher fees and cut off marks for engineering, medical courses made him consider Arts subjects.
According to Government Arts College officials, from April 15 till Monday, they have given 1, 611 application forms under General category and 263 forms under SC/ST category. Officials here have readied upto 11,000 applications and the college can accommodate close to 1,600 students across 24 undergraduate courses in two shifts. The College might send a proposal to increase upto 20% of seats for a particular course if there is a huge demand for it.
