Though mid-term exams are scheduled to be held in December, Standard V students of government schools in Coimbatore are yet to get textbooks for the second term. According to A.K. Periyarmani, father of a student from a government school at Kinathukkadavu, the distribution of textbooks was delayed for 41 days as on Monday.

Mr. Periayarmani on Monday submitted a petition to the District Collector at the grievance redress day seeking immediate action.

“Around 75 Government schools in Kinathukkadavu taluk have not received textbooks for fifth standard students though classes for second term were started on October 1. The examination is scheduled in December. Though the issue was represented to officials with the Minister for Education, Deputy Speaker, officials with the Education Department, MLA and MP, no action has been taken,” he said.

According to Mr. Periayarmani, the Chief Education Officer P. Ayyannan informed him that an official, who was in charge of the distribution of textbooks, failed to submit a report regarding the requirement of textbooks for schools and that caused the delay.

A senior official from the Education Department has assured of distributing textbooks within a week”, said Mr. Periyarmani.

Mr. Ayyannan was not available to clarify on the issue though The Hindu tried to reach him over phone.
