Officials of the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department inspected hotels and restaurants in the city and seized 40 kilograms of unhygienic and stale cooked poultry meat, frozen parottas and noodles here on Wednesday.

A team of food safety officers comprising S. Selvan and B.S. Arunkumar inspected eight vegetarian and non-vegetarian hotels at Kumalankuttai and Palayapalayam on Perundurai Road and found rotten chicken, grilled chicken, cooked chicken, 15 packets of rotten mushrooms, and parottas in the freezer. Also, cooked rice meant for preparing fried rice and cooked chicken that was stored for many days and being served to customers were stored in refrigerators.

Samples were taken and the meat and other food items were destroyed. Officials said notice was served to the hotel owners. Also, they warned the hotel owners against selling unhygienic or stale poultry meat. Inspection was also held in Gobichettipalayam, Bhavani, Perundurai and Sathyamangalam areas.

Officials said that the department had initiated a week-long drive from August 23 during which bakeries, hotels and restaurants will be inspected across the district. “The drive is not only to seize unhygienic food items, but also to educate food business operators on following all food and safety standards”, they added.

Complaints related to poor quality of food can be taken up with the District Food Safety Authority at WhatsApp number 94440-42322, they added.
