A ‘Valluvar Kottam’ made of 300 kg of spices at St. Thomas Higher Secondary School in Gudalur greeted visitors to the Spice Show on Friday.
The 13x5x7 ft structure was built using 14 different spices, including black pepper, fenugreek, cumin seeds, chilli seeds, fennel seeds, and star anise.
The entrance to the spice show was decorated using a 12x2x15 ft exhibit designed to create awareness among farmers about the negative effects of use of pesticides, and of the benefits of organic farming.
In a bid to get local farmers and merchants involved in the show, two stalls of merchants in Gudalur town too was set up.
Horticulture Department, Forest Department, the police, TANTEA, and the Pasteur Institute in Coonoor, among others have set up stalls. The Revenue Department would conduct a fireworks show at the venue on Sunday to mark the conclusion of the show.
Officials said that more than 3,000 have visited the show on the inaugural day.
Nilgiris District Collector, Innocent Divya, inaugurated the event.
