With the start of the new academic year, City Police have launched a special drive to control underage riding. As many as 30 cases were registered in Coimbatore City on Wednesday.

The special drive was initiated in the wake of increase in traffic violations involving students who are below 18 years.

Apart from accidents, underage riders also accounted for violations such as riding without helmet, speeding, and triple riding.

School zones

“The special drive is being conducted in school zones in the morning and evening. It will continue for some time,” said M. Durai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

The drive was initiated based on instructions from City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj at the weekly traffic review meeting.

Those caught for underage riding were imposed a fine of ₹1,000 each. Officials said that a total amount of ₹30,000 was levied on 30 offenders on a single day.

During summer holidays, the police had conducted a similar drive.

Other violations

Apart from underage riding, the police registered 75 cases of driving without licence.

While 432 people were booked for riding two-wheeler without wearing helmet, 74 cases were registered for triple riding. As many as 21 cases of rash driving and 10 cases of speeding were also registered on Wednesday.

Fine collected

“Fine to the tune of ₹2.43 lakh was collected from the offenders during the special drive conducted within the limits of Traffic East and West police station limits,” said Traffic (West) Inspector K.V. Sathasivem.

According to police, some of the city schools were strictly monitoring students to avoid underage riding. This was being done with the support of parents teachers association and student representatives.
