Special court to deal with cases of domestic violence against women comes up in Coimbatore

A special court to deal with cases registered under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, started functioning here recently.

Judicial Magistrate N. Thilageswari was appointed judge for the new court situated in the Combined Court Complex in the city.

Principal District and Sessions Judge R. Sakthivel inaugurated the new court in the presence of District Collector K. Rajamani and Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan.

The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act mandates the magistrate of the special court to fix the first date of hearing, which shall not ordinarily be beyond three days from the date of receipt of the application by the court.

It also mandates the magistrate to endeavour to dispose of every application within a period of 60 days from the date of the first hearing. As many as 592 cases registered under provisions of the Act in Coimbatore district will be heard by the new court.

Mr. Sakthivel also inaugurated a District Munsif Court-cum-Judicial Magistrate Court at Madukkarai in the presence of Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani, District Collector, Coimbatore Rural Superintendent of Police Sujit Kumar, MLA A. Shanmugam and judicial officers. The new court will hear 480 civil cases, 633 criminal cases and 2,009 first information reports registered in Madukkarai taluk limits, which were pending as on August 28.

Sources said that efforts were being made to open Combined Court Complex namely Additional District Munsif Court, Special Court for Motor Claims Tribunal Original Petition (MCOP)- II, Special Court for cases under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and Fourth Additional Sub-Court in Coimbatore and an Additional Munsif Court in Pollachi. Works were also under way to split District Munsif Court-cum-Judicial Magistrate Court, Mettupalayam, into two separate courts.
