The Erode City Municipal Corporation has begun executing nine projects worth ₹ 344.80 crore under the Smart Cities Mission and the works are expected to be completed on time.

Erode Corporation was one among the 12 cities selected by the Government of India for implementing the Smart Cities projects under Round 4 in 2018-19. A special purpose vehicle - Erode Smart City Limited- was floated under the Companies Act to execute the projects worth ₹ 988.15 crore.

At present, nine projects worth ₹ 344.80 crore are in the implementation stage, three projects to the tune of ₹ 299.13 crore are under tender evaluation stage and other projects are under preparation stage.

Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan said that the Centre as well as the State Governments have released their share for the projects. He said that the city ranks seventh in the State in the implementation of the projects.

The projects proposed under the Smart Cities Mission include, water supply distribution networks to Area Based Development (ABD) at ₹ 145.33 crore, Under Ground Sewerage Scheme and service connections (₹ 36.40 crore), integrated command and control centre (₹ 30 crore), waste management using biomining method (₹ 37.25 crore), micro-composting centres (₹ 13.58 crore), green space in 30 parks (₹ 24.93 crore), smart roads (₹ 41.30 crore), LED lamps for energy saving measures (Rs. 12 crore), smart classrooms in 27 schools (₹ 10 crore), UGSS to unsewered areas of the Corporation (₹ 65.64 crore), development of Perumpallam Canal (₹ 183.63 crore), construction of textile hub at Gani Market ( ₹ 51.59 crore) and signboards in ABD areas (₹ 12.85 crore).
