Slain policeman’s daughter gets job after two decades

S. Lavanya (21), daughter of constable R. Selvaraj who was murdered during the 1997 communal riots in Coimbatore city, was given the job of junior assistant at the Coimbatore north taluk office. She joined duty on Monday.

Selvaraj, traffic constable attached to Coimbatore City Police, was stabbed by members of Al Ummah on November 29, 1997 without any provocation.

Aged 35, Selvaraj was on duty at Ukkadam when the incident happened.

At the time of the murder, Lavanya was ten-months-old.

A statement issued by city police said that District Collector ordered to give the job to the slain policeman’s daughter on compassionate ground after police continuously followed up the matter.

Lavanya with her mother met Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan on Monday and got his blessings.
