Siruthuli to clean seven tanks of Noyyal River System

Contributions will be for small parts of the work

In March last year, Siruthuli launched a joint initiative to clean the Noyyal River System in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, and Karur districts.

It is a project that will involve the public, companies, and non-governmental organisations, and will look at rejuvenating the entire system of the Noyyal.

On Tuesday, Siruthuli will take up cleaning of seven tanks.

“We have identified seven water bodies. We will start with four,” said Vanitha Mohan, managing trustee of Siruthuli. The entire water body will be cleaned.

At Pudhukulam (near Vedapatti), the PSG Group will support the cleaning work. At Ukkulam (Semmedu), members of Semmedu- Ukkulam Irrigation and Rural Farmers’ Welfare Association will contribute. This is a water body that has never gone dry but for this year. Apart from the farmers, businesses will also pitch in.

Contributions will be for small parts of the work so that more people can contribute. Ganganarayanasamudharam, located near Perur, is a huge water body and needs to be desilted completely. These are located outside the city and hence might not need much maintenance after the cleaning, she said.

Minister S.P. Velumani will launch the programme on Tuesday.
