After tasting success with the zero management scheme implemented in ward 23 (a part of R.S. Puram) under the name ‘Shunya’, the Coimbatore Corporation will expand the waste management system to 30 more wards.
According to sources, the Corporation was in the process of rolling out the scheme to the 30 wards in two or three phases and for this purpose was engaged in creating waste management parks. The conservancy workers would take the dry waste collected from houses and commercial establishments in the wards to the parks for category-wise segregation.
They would weigh and store the segregated dry waste to be sold to recyclers on a regular basis for a sum that would go to their bank account. As for the wet waste, the workers would send them to the transit stations and from there to the dump yard at Vellalore.
Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan said that through this move the civic body tried to decentralise waste management and bring down the quantity of waste sent to the Vellalore dump yard.
The sources said that the Corporation had equipped and trained the conservancy workers in the wards identified and given them the right push carts to collect segregated waste.
In the first phase, the Corporation would implement the scheme in 18 of the 30 wards and then scale up the efforts to include the remaining 12. It was also in the process of tying up with the vendors to buy the segregated waste.
Remove the bins
The objective was to remove the bins in the wards and also reduce the quantity of waste taken to the Vellalore yard so that the Corporation got to save on waste management expenditure, including that on fuel for lorries.
