Seek compensation for crop failure: Mutharasan

State Secretary of Communist Party of India R. Mutharasan has said that kuruvai cultivation could not be carried out for the past eight years and wanted compensation to be obtained both from the Central and the Karnataka governments.

Addressing mediapersons here on Monday, he said that the State failed to receive its share of Cauvery water from Karnataka in the past years leading to crop failure. “The State cannot ensure water for even one crop in Delta region. It must prepare a report and seek compensation from both the governments”, he added.

He said that as per the final orders of the Supreme Court, the State’s allocation of Cauvery water is 177.25 tmc and the Cauvery Water Management Authority had directed Karnataka to release 9.19 tmc for June and 31 tmc for July.

But the water was not released so far and the State government remains a spectator, he added.

Mr. Mutharasan said that the party continue to oppose “One Country, One Election” idea as it is against the idea of democracy. Also, it needs six months to read the draft National Education Policy, 2019 and submit proposals.

Taking a dig at the State government for the present water crisis, he said that the cost of a tanker load of water has increased from ₹1,500 to ₹9,500 in Chennai and wanted steps to be taken to conserve rainwater and improve the groundwater level. He opposed the various Central government projects that were designed to pass through farmlands and wanted it to be implemented on alternative routes.
