Perundurai MLA Thoppu N.D. Venkatachalam has said that the district administration has cancelled its decision to handover the Perundurai Government Boys Higher Secondary School playground to a temple in the area and asked people not to believe rumours.

In a statement issued here, he said that a particular community wanted the 15 cent land to be transferred to Sellandiamman Thirukovil that comes under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR and CE).

A meeting chaired by the MLA was held on October 29 in which members of various political parties and welfare organisations participated.

The statement said that a resolution was passed opposing the transfer of land and the decision was taken up with the District Collector who said that no further action was taken against the petition submitted by the particular community and was rejected.

Mr. Venkatachalam further added that the Collector had assured him that government land will only be given to schools and government departments and not to private persons or organisations.

The temple is located near the playground and members of the community sought the land for the use of devotees.

However, the decision evoked stiff opposition from the public.
