A day after the Corporation officials placed sandbags to prevent leak in the surplus weir of the Ukkadam Big Tank, the miscreants, who caused the leak by removing the sandbags, are yet to be identified as of Tuesday.

P. Paramanandham, one of the fishermen from Ukkadam who found the leak on Monday morning, alleged that the miscreants could have come from Kallamedu or Karumbukadai localities. “We have filed a compliant with Ukkadam police and Selvapuram police regarding this,” he said.

On Monday at around 8 a.m., Mr. Paramanandham and a group of fishermen found that the sandbags on the surplus weir were removed, resulting in the discharge of water from the Ukkadam Big Tank. Attempting to plug the leak using sandbags, they also informed the Smart City Project officials. Nearly 300 sandbags were used by the fishermen, according to Mr. Paramanandham. The Corporation officials unloaded sand using earthmovers on top of the sandbags to temporarily block the leak, he said.

“Had the leak been left unchecked, nearly half of the tank might have been emptied in a day,” Mr. Paramanandham claimed.

Police sources said that no cases had been registered regarding the issue.

A senior Corporation official said that the works to repair the weir using concrete were yet to be started. “We have already given the instructions,” the official said.
