Rural police revisit five unresolved murders

June 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Coimbatore rural police who have detected more than 96 per cent of the murders reported across the district during the last four years are now revisiting five murders that could not be resolved since 2012. This includes two murders in 2012 and one each in from 2013 to 2015.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Coimbatore District M. Sudhakar said that of the 47 murders reported in 2013, 45 were detected. In 2014, 39 of the total 40 murders were detected.

“These pending cases are revisited in a bid to solve them with the available information,” he said.

The SP said that the inspector of the police stations concerned and two sub-inspectors are working on the cases with cooperation of the officers who served at the police station when those murders were reported. “Progress of these cases is constantly reviewed,” the SP added.

Identified

While the victims were identified in three cases, the two other cases – reported at the Negamam police station on December 26, 2014, and at Chettipalayam police station on March 16, this year – remain a bigger challenge for the investigating teams as the victims have not been identified.

At Negamam, a man aged about 45 years was found dead in a gunny bag near the bridge at Vadachithur River. In the other incident, a man aged between 35-40 years was found murdered at Vannamparai at Thegani near Chettipalayam. Senior police officers said that identifying the victim is the key to tracking his whereabouts and the reason and persons behind the incident.

The earliest among these undetected murders is that of Meharaj (28), a Nepali national who was a security guard at the house of the owner of a sizing mill, at Kaniyur, on the Avinashi Road. He was at work in the night on March 17, 2012, when he was stabbed. Karumathampatty Police is investigating the case.

On May 3, 2012, K. Kaliamma (55) was found dead in a decomposed condition, at the EB Quarters, near Pilloor Dam. She was found dead a few days after she was murdered.

Samiyapillai (60) of Indra Nagarm Edayarpalayam, died after unidentified persons made two successive attempts on his life on May 10, 2013. Thudiyalur police said that he was attacked with a sharp weapon in the afternoon.

He was treated and discharged the same day. Later in the day, he was stabbed to death.

A major constraint in resolving the murders is cited as shortage of manpower due to which a dedicated team could not be deployed to crack these cases. The existing teams have to attend to day-to-day issues and probe the unresolved murders as well.
