Officials from the Salem Railway Division conducted a surprise drive at various railway junctions and on trains under the division to check the sale of unauthorised packaged drinking water bottles.

Officials from Commercial Department and Security Department conducted the drive on July 8 and 9. They checked for overpricing, hygiene and sale of unauthorised brands of packaged water. Teams led by E. Harikrishnan, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, and H. Srinivasa Rao, Divisional Security Commandant, checked the stalls on railway platforms at over 20 major and minor railway stations under the division and also checked on board 40 important trains and its pantry cars. However, no discrepancies were found by the railway officials in the sale of packaged drinking water. The officials said that all stalls and on trains, only Railneer and other approved brands of packaged drinking water was found and there were no instances of overpricing. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that the raids were conducted following complaints of sale of unhygienic water, overpricing and reuse of water bottles in other divisions. However, no such cases were found here.

The railway officials advised public to use helpline number 138 to alert them in case of sale of unapproved water bottles or overcharging of packaged water.
