Residents of Ward 51 to boycott local body polls

The Federation of Residential Welfare Associations of Ward 51 in the city has said that voters in the ward would boycott the upcoming local body polls.

According to K. Ramasubramanian, organiser of the Federation, the reasons behind the decision to boycott the elections included unresolved civic issues in their area, poor maintenance of the park and underground drainage, lack of efforts to retrieve the encroached reserved sites that are meant for use by the public, poor collection of garbage, poor maintenance of the E-Seva centre, and doubling of Property Tax in the city.

Action has not been taken against commercial establishments for violation of building norms and no elected representative has visited the Ward so far to understand the issues faced by the people.

Further, the residents have been demanding a multi-level car parking facility on Crosscut Road for nearly 10 years now and it has not been fulfilled. The ward is excluded from the Smart Cities Mission because of “vested political interests,” he alleged.

The ward has nearly 15,000 voters, he said.
