Residents intercept lorry carrying biomedical waste

October 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Residents of Muslim Colony, near ACC Cement factory, intercepted a truck from Kerala carrying biomedical waste. The waste was intended to be dumped at their locality. Residents said that two operators collected hospital wastes from hospitals in Kerala and dumped it close to their locality, covering it with a layer of mud.

They claimed that this practice was taking place for the past several months and about 20 truck loads were dumped by the truckers from that State in their residential area so far. It is alleged that the trucks arrived at midnight and dumped the waste when people were asleep.

“On Wednesday evening, three trucks came to our locality. Two trucks were turned back, while one was intercepted,” M.N. Minasuddin, Vice-President of the Madukkarai Lorry Owners Association, said. They wanted the revenue and police officials to put an end to this practice and also to step up vigil across the State’s border.
