The district administration, schools and colleges organised events in and around the city, on Thursday, to remember former President of India A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and celebrate his vision for the youth and the nation.

Students of Anan Kids Academy at Kalapatti made a portrait of the late former president with salt on a 3,241-sq.ft. area.

School principal Amit Kumar said that about 500 students from Pre KG to Class X took part in the initiative. It took the children three hours to make the portrait for which they used salt in five colours.

An outline of the mosaic was drawn and students from various classes filled in allotted portions with the coloured salt.

The district administration organised a “Youth Awakening Day” rally in which 1,200 school and college students took part.

The rally was flagged off by District Collector Archana Patnaik at the Collectorate. The students marched from there till Nehru Stadium, holding aloft placards with inspirational messages on energy conservation, involvement of youth in nation building, etc.

Similar rallies were organised by the Government Arts College, which was also flagged off by the Collector and by Kalaignar Karunanidhi Institute of Technology that was flagged off by college chairman Pongalur N. Palanisamy.

Several educational institutions held talks, erected banners and organised motivating programmes to realise Kalam’s dream of motivating young people to lead the nation to greater heights.
