Out of 8,000 autorickshaws in the city, meters have been recalibrated for more than 2,000 vehicles, sources from the Regional Transport Office said.

According to official sources, meter service centres have roped in extra hands from Chennai to finish the work ahead of the deadline on December 16.

It is learnt that a meter manufacturing company that has direct outlets in Sundarapuram and on Madukkarai Road, which had one or two mechanics each, has now about 10 mechanics in each outlet.

“Each of these two centres can calibrate at least 500 meters a day,” the official said. At this rate all the autorickshaws in the city could get their meters calibrated in less than two weeks.

No complaints

A week after the city traffic police and RTO officials jointly launched a drive against fleecing by autorickshaw drivers, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) T.K. Rajasekaran told The Hindu, on Friday, that they have not received any complaints on control room numbers 100 and 2300970.

Vehicles fined

Meanwhile, the police imposed fine on about 600 drivers whose vehicles did not have a meter or had faulty meters. The RTO officials and inspectors have checked 1,192 vehicles, imposed a fine on 135 vehicles for various irregularities, and have seized 29 autorickshaws for plying without permit.
