Members of the Congress party took to the streets on Wednesday and staged road blockade at two places demanding action against those who vandalised the statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at Pattanampudur near Sulur.

A five-foot statue of Rajiv Gandhi was found damaged on Wednesday morning. On hearing the news, Congress workers started assembling in large numbers. Police had a tough time controlling the agitators.

Demanding the immediate arrest of those who damaged the statue, they blocked the road at Odderpalayam near Kadri Mills High School on Tiruchi Road. This resulted in the traffic on busy Tiruchi Road being thrown out of gear.

Later, Congress activists led by district presidents V.M.C. Manoharan, A.R. Chinnayan, Mayura Jayakumar and Irugur Subramanian gathered in large numbers at the Lakshmi Mills Junction.
