Rain continued for the sixth consecutive day in many parts of the Nilgiris, including Udhagamandalam town, resulting in trees becoming uprooted and power being disconnected to many parts of the town.
The district administration stated that more than 500 mm of rain had been recorded in the Nilgiris on Sunday and Monday morning, including 34 mm. of rainfall in Udhagamandalam town.
Officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that the intense, blustery winds accompanying the rain caused numerous tree falls along the roads between Udhagamandalam and Manjoor and between Udhagamandalam and Gudalur.
Inside Udhagamandalam town, tree falls were reported near the Government Botanical Garden, Sheddon Road, Fingerpost and along the Udhagamandalam to Kotagiri Road near Doddabetta.
A tree also became uprooted along the Boat House Road, leading to traffic coming to a standstill along the stretch of road. The trees were removed by personnel from the fire and rescue department and traffic flow along the route was restored. However, the tree snapped power lines carrying electricity to Khandal and nearby areas.
Many parts of the town continue to be affected by blackouts as a result of falling trees snapping powerlines.
Boat rides at the boat house were also suspended for large parts of the day on Monday due to the continuing rain.
