Rain damage: Ministers assure farmers compensation

Minister for Electricity P. Thangamani and Minister for Social Welfare V. Saroja inspected the rain damaged water bodies and fields in Erumapatti Panchayat Union in Senthamangalam block on Saturday evening and assured the farmers and other residents adequate compensation.

The Southern part of Kollihills received incessant rainfall on October 10 leading to floods in the supply channels of various tanks under the Water Resource Organisation (WRO) of the River Sarabanga System of the PWD.

Breaches were reported in ten spots in the supply channel of Pavithram lake, Varagur lake supply channel, and in seven spots in the supply channels of Sarapalli, Thirbamadevi, Erumapatti and N. Pudupatti lakes.

Rainwater damages were also reported in Periyar river. The breaches in the supply channels had also led to damages in the fields, farm wells and private farms.

The WRO of River Sarabanga System has undertaken the work of closing the breaches and other renovation works on a war footing.

Mr. Thangamani and Ms. Saroja inspected the restoration works of the damaged bunds of the water bodies. They also inspected the fields, farm wells and the crops in the private farms which suffered damages.

Many farmers and local people presented petitions seeking adequate compensation from the government for the loss suffered. The Ministers handed over the petitions to the authorities. Mr. Thangamani assured them to take up the matter to the notice of the Chief Minister.

The revenue officials would inspect the affected fields and recommend adequate compensation to the affected people, he said.

R. Gowthaman, Executive Engineer of the WRO of River Sarabanga System, explained the restoration works of the water bodies in progress.

Mr. Thangamani declared open the new buildings of the fair price shops in Pudukottai village in Erumapatti union and Kurumbapatti village in Valayapatti panchayat, both constructed at an outlay of ₹ 15.50 lakh from the Senthamangalam MLA Local Area Development Fund.

P. R. Sundaram, MP, C. Chandrasekaran, MLA, and P. Kranthi Kumar, Sub-Collector, Namakkal, were present.

The Ministers also attended functions at Elachipalayam panchayat union, when they inaugurated a dozen development projects completed at an outlay of ₹ 1.14 crore and also laid foundation for another 11 new projects worth ₹ 1.85 crore. The projects include construction of community buildings and laying of roads.

The Ministers distributed milch animals and goats provided by the animal husbandry department to 288 beneficiaries of 87 Goundampalayam panchayat, 85 Goundampalayam panchayat, Agaram and Puthur East panchayats.
