The protests against the hike in the price of petrol continued in Salem city on Monday with the Salem East unit of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staging a demonstration urging the Central Government to roll back the hike with immediate effect.

The cadre led by unit president P. Nagaraj and secretary Pon. Saravanan staged the demonstration near the Old Bus Stand raising slogans against the Congress-led UPA government for the rise in petrol price, which they claimed had affected the poor and middle income groups badly. The prices of essential commodities had gone up, they claimed.

They added that the oil majors were misleading the nation on the crude oil price and charged the Union Government for supporting multinational firms for the hike.

Various other organisations also staged protests against the price rise of petrol in the city and towns across the district.
