Probe on into charges of abduction, cheating

Pollachi police are investigating into charges of cheating levelled against Vivek alias Vicky (24), of Udhagamandalam, by persons whom he allegedly cheated. Inquiry is also on into the claim made by Vivek that he was abducted by three persons, who demanded their money back following his failure to get them overseas employment.

According to police, Vivek had advertised in newspapers regarding employment prospects in overseas countries and had taken money from various people.

From over 90 persons hailing from Coimbatore, Erode, Pollachi, Pudukottai, Sathyamangalam, Madurai and Karaikudi, he had reportedly collected about Rs. 3 crore. He is said to have taken 40 persons to Thailand on a tourist visa and deserted them there. Bangkok police arrested 13 persons and the remaining 27 had to pay a penalty of Rs. 75,000 each to return to India.

On their return, the affected persons searched for Vivek and it is learnt that three persons from Pudukottai allegedly abducted him. Vivek reportedly escaped, when they stopped the car on the Pollachi – Udumalpet Road. Investigations are on.

Commotion at CMCH

Tense moments prevailed at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Monday night. According to sources, two police personnel guarding the convict ward reportedly objected to the “late night partying of the house surgeons, besides rash driving inside the campus.” Agitated house surgeons objected to the entry of police personnel into their campus. Later, police officials and hospital authorities held talks with the house surgeons and the issue was resolved on Tuesday after the police personnel reportedly apologised.

Road blockade

Residents of Rangasamudram near Zamin Kottampatti in Pollachi resorted to a road blockade for nearly three hours. The residents of the area reportedly reeled under water scarcity as they did not get adequate water from the Aliyar – Ambarampalayam Scheme because of the frequent power cuts. Residents were forced to walk two kilo meters to fetch water as the village never had a bore well.

The road blockade that lasted for three hours from 8 a.m. paralysed the traffic. The officials held talks and the road blockade was finally lifted around 11 a.m.

Two held for theft

P. Sankara Narayanan (19) and K. Prakash Sundaram (18), students of a private college in Coimbatore, were arrested by the police on charges of stealing Rs. 10,000 from the cash box of a shop in Madathukulam.

According to sources, the duo had tried to take pictures of women using their cellular phone in Palani, but were chased by public. On their way back, they reportedly stole the money.

Complaint lodged

Jayanthi, 27, of Coimbatore, who married Rufus, 32, of Valparai, has lodged a police complaint against her husband and in-laws for harassing her demanding dowry. Jayanthi's family gave 50 sovereigns and Rs. 1 lakh as dowry at the time of marriage, the complaint said.

She also alleged that she gave Rs. 3 lakh for helping Rufus clear his arrears papers and another Rs. 15 lakh to get him a chance in tinsel town. The complaint adds that Rufus started consuming alcohol and harassed her demanding more money. Jayanthi alleged that she had given about Rs. 22 lakhs ever since the marriage in 2007. Based on a complaint, police have registered a case against Rufus, his father Samidurai and mother Navamani.

Man convicted

Judicial Magistrate 1 L.S. Sathyamurthy on Tuesday convicted and sentenced S. Nagaraj (26) to undergo rigorous imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 500 on charges of dowry harassment.

According to police, Nagaraj married Wahida Banu, daughter of Nazeer Ahmed of Chettipalayam Road in Podanur, on February 15, 2009.

It is learnt that after the marriage, Nagaraj harassed his wife demanding money. She lodged a complaint with the Thudialur All Women Police station and a case was registered for harassment under sections 498 (A) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The Magistrate found him guilty of the charges and convicted to undergo one year rigorous imprisonment each for the two charges and a fine of Rs. 500.
