Prison gets gymnasium

A gymnasium for staff was inaugurated on the premises of Coimbatore Central Prison on Wednesday. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Prisons, V.M. Mohammed Haneefa said it will help the staff stay physically and mentally fit.

Stress has become a part of the day-to-day activities of prison staff and there were incidents when prison staff fell ill due to stress. A senior prison authority here died while on duty. Efforts are taken by the Prisons Department to relieve the staff from stress. The gym was established with the help of sponsors.

There are 265 men staff and 38 women staff in the prison. Prison authorities said that a time slot will be allotted for the women to make use of the facility, till a gymnasium was exclusively established for women staff when their staff strength goes up with the full-fledged functioning of the special prison for women.

“A few months ago, two prison staff and two inmates were sent to Puzhal Prison for undergoing yoga training,” Coimbatore Central Prison Superintendent D. Pazhani and others were present.
