Municipal Administration Minister, Deputy Speaker inspect Valparai road damaged due to landslip

The Pollachi-Valparai road is yet to be opened for heavy vehicles due to fresh landslips between third and ninth hairpin bends for the fourth day on Sunday, though the intensity of rain decreased from Saturday.

The landslips occurred on Aliyar-Valparai road due to flash flood for the past few days. Besides landslips, the road was badly damaged due to huge boulders that rolled down from the hills.

Due to this heavy vehicles were not allowed beyond Aliyar check post. This had resulted in shortage of some of the essentials and petroleum products at Valparai.

The TNSTC authorities had to stop operations completely in the hilly area as the retaining wall of its depot was damaged and water entered the depot.

Meanwhile, Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development S.P. Velumani and Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly Pollachi V. Jayaraman inspected the Valparai road that was damaged due to landslips. Officials were directed to repair the landslips on a war-footing. The Minister also distributed welfare assistance to those affected in the flood in Vazhaithottam area.

Major dams in Coimbatore and Pollachi were filled up and the excess water was being let into rivers. Water levels of dams in feet (full level in bracket): Sholayar Dam 161.85 (160) inflow was 13,768.87 c/s and outflow as 13,951.39 c/s, Aliyar Dam of PAP stood at 118.10 feet (120 feet) and water inflow into the dam was 3658 c/s and outflow was 3577 c/s, Parampikulam Dam 69.50 (72) inflow was 5966 c/s outflow was 5966 c/s sources in WRO said. The water levels of major dams in Tirupur district: Amaravathi Dam - 85.40 (90) feet, inflow: 4906 c/s and outflow: 5210 c/s; Thirumoorthi Dam - 56.18 (60) feet, inflow : 356 c/s and outflow: 28 c/s.

Rainfall details in mm in Coimbatore district on Saturday: Valparai 40, Upper Neerar 72, Lower Neerar 59, Kadamparai 7, Sarkarpathy 13, Upper Aliyar 2, Navamalai 2 and Pollachi 3 mm.

Schools, colleges closed

Meanwhile, the district administration has declared holiday for schools and colleges in Valparai taluk on Monday due to continuous rain.
