Policeman’s short film on drunk driving hits the screens

En Thangachikku Kalyanam, a short film made by city-based policeman Rakki Mahesh aka C. Maheswaran (51), not only depicts the dangers of drunk driving, but also its social impacts.

The short film, running for a duration of 13 minutes, begins with the wedding preparations of a woman and her elder brother going out with friends in a car to receive the groom and party. Following a delay in the arrival of the groom, the friends force the bride’s brother to consume alcohol. Though not fully drunk, the man loses control over the car and rams a stationary lorry on the way.

The short film shows the man after a few months of treatment and narrates how a wrong choice he had made spoiled the life of his beloved sister. The groom’s family had cancelled the wedding knowing about the alcoholism of the bride’s brother.

En Thangachikku Kalyanam is the eighth short film made by Mr. Maheswaran, head constable with the central crime branch of Coimbatore city police.

His earlier short films namely Ippadikku Police, Avar Varuvaara?, Nil Gavani Sel, etc. covered other aspects of road safety like importance of wearing helmet, harmful effects of violating traffic rules.

“En Thangachikku Kalyanam is currently screened by QUBE as 1.5minute-long public service announcement (PSA) in 75 cinemas in Tamil Nadu during interval”, said Mr. Maheswaran.

Another short film on traffic awareness, Ithu thaguma, was dubbed into Hindi (Kya Yeh Sahi Hai) and screened in theatres in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata through the Rotary International.

Mr. Maheswaran recently completed four short narrative videos on Tamil Nadu police, police and welfare, forest brigand Veerappan and police control room for screening at the audio visual room getting readied at the Police Museum.
