With footages from closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras playing a vital role in crime detection, the police have asked the residents, traders and owners of commercial establishments across the district to install surveillance cameras on their premises.

Superintendent of Police S. Sakthi Ganesan said that 11,000 surveillance cameras have already been installed at vital locations, religious places, commercial establishments and in places where people gather in large numbers. “With the hel p of footages, the police had apprehended many accused”, he said and added that people have now started realising the importance of surveillance cameras.

Senior police officials wanted cameras installed in residential localities and commercial establishments.

Mr. Ganesan said that many burglaries that took place in Kavindapadi, Gobichettipalayam, Sathyamangalam, Perundurai, Bhavani and Kodumudi were cracked with the help of the footages from the surveillance cameras. He said that crime rates have come down after installation of CCTV cameras.
